owl nesting box
tawny owl family
This is a tawny chick but the first occupant was a grey squirrel; jackdaws also frequented the box. Tawny owls nested for three seasons. There was also one season of breeding barn owls. The box lasted 7 years before it had to be taken down. At this time it was completely filled with all sorts of twigs and greenery, largely put there by squirrels.

Young tawnies couldn't fly but they could climb and would spend much of the day sitting on branches high up in the canopy.

This is one of the parent owls. It looked very strange since it had lost a lot of its chest feathers.
