Rich brown underside with white lines edged with black.

This species is fairly scarce and spends much of its time near the top of trees ('master trees'), often ash.
The female descends to lay eggs in hedgerows. This usually occurs in August and September.
This egg was found in a blackthorn bush. Males are rarely seen.
