Common across southern Europe
(these photos taken in Extremadura, Spain).
Large reddish area on underside of forewing makes this fritillary unmistakeable.
Green underside with some creamy-white stripes.
Also white spots with a diffuse brownish surround.
Female seen in mid-September in Spain.
The overall impression was of a fast flying, washed out looking specimen
with a predominantly pale green appearance, particularly underneath.
Several specimens like this were seen in Extremadura and central Spain.
Such a contrast to early season specimens. Since the species is univoltine
they have presumably become very worn and are some of the last survivors of the season.

The upperside markings are very similar to silver-washed fritillary, form valezina.
