There is a fairly thick black mark in s2 which is very near the
junction of v3 and the cell (see Mountain fritillary for more detail).
There is another suggested diagnostic for distinguishing Mountain and Shepherd's
and this requires inspection of the lines of black spots in the sub-marginal
area of the upper side forewing: ... if the two lines of spots from s1b to s6
are parallel with one another then it's Mountain; if not, it's Shepherd's.
In this case, it appears to confirm Shepherd's.

Shows fairly contrasting colours.
In general, underside of hindwing shows brighter and more contrasting colours than
those seen on Mountain fritillary.
